Frequently asked questions
Scheduling
How do repeating tasks work?
A task can repeat every day, on chosen weekdays, every other week, monthly or even yearly — or be a one-time task with an optional date. It appears under Today on the days it is due. Tasks landing within the coming week also line up under Upcoming, marked with the day they arrive. An Anytime task has no schedule at all: it is always available — perfect for bonus chores — and its row quietly shows how many days ago it was last done. A repeating task can opt into Anytime in its editor — on days its schedule does not call for it, it lines up there too. A category can gather its tasks under its own collapsible heading in Anytime — the Group in its own section switch when editing the category; other tasks mix together, each labeled with its category. A category can also take a Parent category in its editor: its tasks then show inside the parent's group, labeled with the full path. And when a category is done for good, Archive category hides it and its tasks everywhere while the history stays. The groups themselves line up after the loose tasks, in the same order as your category list. A group can also start open — the Expanded by default switch next to it.
What does “Upcoming” show?
Tasks landing within the coming week — in each member’s card and among the family’s shared tasks alike — lined up with the day they arrive: Tomorrow, or the weekday and date. The rows are a preview: there is nothing to check off yet, and the task joins the day’s list when its day comes.
Can I pick out tasks to do today?
Yes — swipe right on a task under Anytime or Upcoming and choose Do today: the task joins To do today for that day, for the whole family.
The choice covers just that day — whatever is left undone quietly returns to its old spot the next morning. Swipe right again and choose Not today to put it back sooner. Doing an upcoming task ahead of time counts for its scheduled day, so it will not ask again.
What does “every other week” mean?
The task is due on its chosen weekdays every second week. The rhythm anchors at the first selected weekday, and the editor’s “Next time” row shows exactly when it lands next.
Can I pause a task?
Yes — the task editor has a pause switch (say, lawn mowing over winter). A paused task keeps its schedule, points and history but is not due anywhere until you resume it.
It stays listed in the Family tab with a pause badge.
What happens to a one-time task?
It stays under Today — flagged as overdue once its date passes — until someone does it. Then it is crossed out for that day and archives itself afterwards.
Turn on Keep after it's done in the task editor and the task skips the auto-archiving and stays — handy for shopping lists and other living checklists.
What does “Overdue” mean?
A one-time task with a date stays listed past its day, marked with the date it was due. A missed repeating task keeps showing on the following days as “Overdue” with how many days late it is — doing it late counts on the day it was actually done.
Not happening this time? Swipe right and choose Postpone — the task rests until its next scheduled day.
Can I postpone a task?
Yes — swipe right on an unfinished repeating task under Today and choose Postpone. The pending occurrence is dismissed — any overdue backlog behind it too — and the task rests until its next scheduled day; a newly missed day nags again. The task’s editor lists the postponed days since it was last completed — swipe a row there to remove one.
Everyone postpones their own occurrence of a personal task, while a shared or rotating task’s postpone covers the whole family. One-time and Anytime tasks have no occurrence to skip, so they offer no postpone.
The same right swipe also offers Do today on tasks under Anytime and Upcoming, and Not today on tasks picked into the day.
Can I check off tasks on another day?
Yes — on the Day tab, step between days with the arrows or tap the date pill to jump anywhere in a calendar; check-offs land on the day you are viewing. The weekday buttons below switch days within the shown week with one tap. The Week tab does the same per week, and every day cell in its grid can be logged directly.
Can I see just one family member's tasks?
Yes — tap the filter button next to the search icon at the top of the Today and Family tabs, and pick a member: their tasks and events show, with the family's shared tasks always below. Everyone shows every member first and the shared tasks last. The filter starts on your This is me profile — or on Everyone when none is picked — and keeps your pick; once the app has been away for a while, it returns to your profile.
Who gets a task’s reminders?
Reminders ring only on the devices whose “This is me” is one of the people picked for the task — a rotating task reminds just the person whose turn it is that day. Once your own part is done, your phone goes quiet. On a repeating task a reminder is a clock time for its due days; an Anytime task or a one-time task without a date picks a full date instead.
A device where no profile is picked gets every reminder.
What are events?
Events are things that happen — a dentist appointment, a match — not chores to check off. Create one from the Family tab’s plus menu and pick who sees it: it shows at the top of those members’ Today lists — today’s under Events, tomorrow’s under their own Tomorrow heading.
An event can never become overdue, be postponed or be checked off. Tap it to edit, pause or archive it — and restore archived ones under Archived events.
An event is all-day by default. Give it a start time — and optionally an end time — and the time shows on the row, with new reminders suggested an hour before the start.
Doing tasks together
Everyone vs. Anyone — what’s the difference?
“Everyone” gives each picked member their own copy — everyone brushes their own teeth.
“Anyone” is one shared task for the whole family: checking it off logs it for the profile picked under “This is me” — if no profile is picked, the app asks who you are first. Did someone else do it, or several together? Swipe left and pick “Who did it?” — everyone you pick gets the full points.
How does rotation work?
A rotating task takes turns among the picked members — one person is on duty each due day, following the family’s member order. Tap the rotation badge on the row to swap whose turn it is today.
Someone else did my task — how do I log that?
Swipe left on the task under Today and pick “Who did it?”. Choose one or more members — the task settles for its owner, and the doers get the points.
For a checklist, the swipe completes the remaining steps. A single step can be swiped the same way.
How do checklists work?
A task can carry steps; it is complete when every step of the round is checked. Steps pay no points on their own — completing the round pays the task’s full points.
You can save a task’s steps as a reusable checklist and import them into other tasks.
The task’s checkbox completes the whole remaining round at once — after a quick confirmation, so one stray tap can’t settle every step.
Family and sharing
Members vs. family sharing — what’s the difference?
Members are the people IN the app — profiles you create and hand tasks to; a whole family can live on one phone. Family sharing connects other PHONES: after an invitation, the same family — tasks, check-offs, points — appears in the app on that person’s device too, and everything stays in sync.
How do I get the family onto another phone?
Open “Manage family…” on the Family tab and pick “Invite family members…” — send the link, for example with Messages. On the other phone: install Family Tasks, open the link and accept, then pick who you are under “This is me”.
Both phones need to be signed in to iCloud. While you join, a progress screen shows the family's tasks being fetched.
What if two phones show different things?
Check Last synced under iCloud in Settings on both phones and tap Sync now — Normal sync is all you usually need. Sync log shows what syncing has been doing on each phone.
The app also repairs itself: items that get stuck are detected and re-sent automatically, and the newest edit wins. If the phones still disagree, tap Sync now and choose Full re-sync on the phone whose data looks right — it re-sends that phone's data to iCloud, including check-offs that failed to sync. If something still can't sync, Settings shows Sync needs attention — send a problem report under Feedback so we can help. Under Export backup… in Backups you can also export a Backup with sync diagnostics — attach it to the report to show us exactly what syncing has done on that phone.
What lives in “Manage family…”?
Everything about the family itself: add, edit and reorder members (the order drives the lists and rotation turns), “This is me”, the family name, family sharing — and, for the owner, deleting the family.
Do the kids need their own phones or iCloud accounts?
No. Members without a device are simply profiles someone else checks off for.
Only a person who should see the family on their own phone needs an invitation — and their own iCloud account.
Who is the family owner?
The person who created the family — it lives in their iCloud. Only the owner can rename or delete the family and send invitations; everyone else joins through the share.
What is “This is me”?
It tells the app which member profile is you on this device — your check-offs are signed with it and your tasks sort first. Pick “Not picked” to clear it — for example on a shared family tablet. Several devices can pick the same profile.
What does Premium include, and who pays?
Premium unlocks rewards, trends and the full history for the whole family. One subscription, paid by the family owner — everyone else gets it automatically.
Have a promo or offer code? Redeem it at the bottom of the Premium page.
Points, streaks and rewards
How are points awarded?
Each completed task pays its points to whoever did it — every time it is done that day. Points become coins that can be spent on the family’s rewards.
How do streaks work?
The flame counts days in a row with at least one completed task. A day that is still in progress never breaks it — only a fully missed day does.
What is the streak reminder?
If you have not checked anything off by 18:00, the app nudges you with Don't lose your streak! — do at least one task a day and your streak lives on. Turn it off under Settings with the Streak reminder switch.
What are rewards?
With Premium, you create rewards — movie night, ice cream — that members redeem with their coins. Long-press a reward card to edit or remove it.
Redemptions are logged so you can honour them later. A badge on the Rewards tab counts the ones still waiting to be handed out.
What are the awards on the family cards?
Members earn awards for milestones like streaks and totals. Tap a member’s award strip in the Family tab to browse the whole gallery.
Statistics
What does the Statistics tab show?
Today lists each member with how many tasks they have done today and their streak — tap a row to see exactly which tasks. Week counts the same per week, and its arrows browse other weeks. With Premium, the Trend chart and the family's whole History follow below.
How do I read the trend chart?
The bar chart under Statistics stacks each period's completed tasks or points, one colour per member. Swipe the chart sideways to travel further back in time, and tap a bar to see the exact numbers behind it.
Can I narrow the trend down?
Yes — show Tasks or Points, group the bars by day, week, month, quarter or year, and filter by member, category or a single task. Coarser groups reach further back in time.
What does the Values tab in the trend show?
The Values tab draws the numbers entered at check-off as a graph — one line per family member, always one task at a time, since a weight and a lap count cannot share an axis. The Task menu lists only tasks with Numbers only turned on in their editor, and the Category filter narrows that menu. Tap the graph to read the exact numbers behind a period.
Periods follow Group by, and when several numbers land in the same period the Show choice decides how they collapse — the task's Default in Statistics picks the starting point. Days without an entry stay empty instead of counting as zero.
Some examples: a weigh-in task with Average follows a weight smoothly even when someone steps on the scale twice a day. Running minutes with Sum grouped by Week show the week's total training time. Laps in the pool with Max show each period's personal record.
What do the Show, Change and Percent choices in the trend mean?
Every Trend tab has a Show control that picks how each period reads. Sum adds everything in the period. Average takes the mean — per day with activity on the Points and Tasks tabs, per entered number on Values. Median is the middle value, steadier when a single day sticks out. Min and Max show the smallest and largest. Count counts the days with activity — or, on Values, how many numbers were entered. First value and Last value show how the period started and ended.
Change and Percent swap the value for the difference against the period before — as a plain number, or in percent. The first period has nothing to compare with, and neither does a period right after an empty one, so those show nothing — the graph never invents values.
An example: group by Week and show Average to see tasks per active day each week. A weight task reads best with Average, and Percent follows the trend week by week.
What does History list?
Every check-off the family has logged, newest first — who did what and when, checklist steps included. The search box filters it by task name, and Show more keeps walking further back; nothing is ever pruned away. Check-off notes show under their rows here too.
History and corrections
How do I log a task for another day?
Open the Week tab and tap any day cell — every cell can be logged, including past days. The Day tab works too: browse to the day with the arrows or the date pill’s calendar, and check off in that day’s list.
“We did take out the trash two days in a row” is exactly what it is for.
How do I undo or correct a check-off?
Tap a completed task’s checkbox to open the day log — the week grid’s day cells open it too. Tap a logged row to un-check that person, or “Log one more” to add a time. A task can also ask for a short note when it is checked off — the Comment on check-off switch in its editor; the note shows on the logged row.
Can I track values like weight or time?
Yes — make the check-off comment a number. Turn on Comment on check-off and Numbers only in the task's editor. Whoever checks the task off enters a number — a weight, minutes, laps — and it shows in the day log.
Open Statistics and choose the Values tab in the Trend graph to see the numbers as a graph over time — one line per family member. The Show control above the graph picks how each period reads — sum, average, median, min, max, count, or the first or last value — and Change or Percent switches to the difference from the previous period; these also work on the Tasks and Points tabs. A value task can set its own default under Default in Statistics in its editor — average suits a weight better than sum.
